Manuscript Evaluation

1 Hour Strategy Session
Written Critique
Strengths Analysis
Opportunities Analysis

During an evaluation, we will read through your manuscript and then provide a written critique. The written critique will address many different elements, such as punctuation, point of view, plot, grammar, syntax, flow, dialogue, characterization, and any other relevant elements of the craft. What we evaluate will be determined by the genre. Every writer has different strengths, so our goal is to help you utilize your strengths by providing constructive criticism as well as encouragement.

When people think of editing, copyediting is usually what comes to mind. Copyediting focuses on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and other mechanical issues. Copyediting can also include fact-checking and editing cover copy and front and back matter. Copyediting is necessary for any written material before publication, and style is determined by the type of publication. For example, newspapers are written in AP style, but fiction manuscripts are usually written in Chicago style.

Stylistic Editing

Syntax
Flow
Voice

As a writer, you have a unique voice and style. The last thing you want is for an editor to take that uniqueness away. During stylistic editing, we will help you discover what makes your style unique, then eliminate clichés, polish your language, and clarify meaning without losing your special voice. Stylistic editing focuses specifically on syntax and flow at a sentence level.

Have you ever started reading a book only to stop halfway through because it got boring? Perhaps you stopped caring about the characters, or the plot slowed down too much, for too long. Maybe the main character's hair color changed halfway through the novel? As a writer, you want to ensure your reader doesn't experience these same frustrations. Content editing is the heaviest type of editing. It focuses on organization and flow, as well as character development and consistency. Content editing will ensure your document or manuscript is clear and concise on the sentence, paragraph, and chapter levels. It will ensure your reader will stay engaged and does not have to backtrack for clarification.
